Your outpatient surgery
Advantages
As emphasized repeatedly on this website, we try in each case to find the gentlest, most conservative way to achieve a cure or, at the least, alleviate your symptoms. Depending on the injury or disease, surgery may not always be avoidable. Even then, you are in the best hands with us. Meanwhile, we perform virtually all surgeries on an outpatient basis; this has decisive advantages for you as a patient. As a general rule, you will usually spend a total of 2.5 to 3 hours at the surgery center (from check-in to check-out). This naturally minimizes the organizational effort required by you. But inpatient surgeries or surgeries on a partial inpatient basis with an overnight stay are also possible, albeit only for privately insured patients and self-payers.
Our Spectrum
In contrast to a broad conservative spectrum, our areas of operative-surgical focus include special subdisciplines for which we can offer you the highest degree of expertise and quality. This is only possible thanks to the rapid further developments and advances in operative techniques within the scope of specialization and a correspondingly high surgery numbers. In this regard, we set ourselves apart from other surgeons. We do not operate “everything”, but only perform those procedures that we are able to do superbly. Specifically in these sensitive areas, our surgeons pursue very extensive training and continuing education. Indeed, Dr. Mahn himself, as an instructor, even passes on his knowledge to other colleagues as well.
Preparations for your operation
Once diagnostics is completed, our usual procedure is to hold a therapy consultation with you. If you have decided to undergo surgery, the proper preparations will be initiated. This mostly means a visit to your general practitioner (GP) for blood tests and an electrocardiogram (ECG). Depending on your age and pre-existing conditions, this visit to your GP might be followed by a consultation with a cardiologist. Next, you meet once more with us so that we can give you information about the surgery and obtain your informed consent, allowing you enough time to ask all and any questions you may have. Finally, you will be referred to a surgical center (Königstein or Frankfurt). All particulars regarding the procedure on and after your surgery date will be explained to you and you will receive the corresponding written documents. That is how we send you off to your surgery—informed and anxiety-free.
Arthroscopic Procedures
Performed through a key hole
Nowadays, arthroscopic surgeries are possible on virtually every joint. The operation is performed simply, through small stab incisions. On the knee, this usually only involves 2 incisions of around 5 mm in length each). Then, an optical instrument is inserted into the joint, enabling the surgeon to visualize and examine the interior of the joint on the monitor. The procedure is performed using special instruments through what is called an access portal, the size of a key hole.
Dr. Mahn is a specially trained arthroscopist certified by the Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery (AGA). The AGA is Europe’s largest medical society in the field of joint surgery. The interventions are performed using state-of-the-art medical equipment; for example, images of the inside of the joint are displayed on the monitor in full-HD quality, allowing even the finest details to be detected and treated.
Dr. Mahn performs all arthroscopic procedures himself.
